Fun, Food, and Festivities Bring in the New Year!
by Teresa West, Chief Steward, MNPS chapter
There was food, fun and festivities surrounding the swearing-in of the newly elected officers and stewards at the January meeting of the schools chapter of SEIU.
Sheila Velazco, Executive Assistant to Eliseo Medina at the International union, did the honors swearing in myself as Chief Steward, Andrew Linear as Assistant Chief Steward, Kay Groves as Recording Secretary, and as Treasurer, Betty Russell. Also sworn in to their positions were Genetta Butler-Cohen, representative for ISS/Campus Supervisors, Cordelia Howard for Secretarial/Clerical representative, and Vicki Nobles accepting the post but unable to attend the ceremony. Sworn in to cover the Food Service area were Martha Lingley and Rhonda Blackshear. Daren Nolen and Lucille Moore were sworn in to cover the Custodial Services area, Rebecca Armstrong for the I.T. position and Michelle Bumpus-Harding and Susan Quinn for Educational Assistants. Two At-Large positions filled by Michael Thomas and Sherry Von Rotz.
After the swearing-in ceremonies, refreshments and entertainment were supplied. If you missed this meeting, you didn’t just miss out on meeting your new officers and stewards. The entertainment phase of the evening complimented the necessary business phase, with as I hear it, the debut and final show of the farewell tour of the “Purple ‘Premes”. Everyone in attendance was in stitches as three of your illustrious leaders made the beginning shows of American Idol look dull. Dressed in purple sequins and feather boas, they lip-synced the words of the Supremes’ “Baby Love”. Believe me when I say that the entertainment world will never be the same! Look out Motown!
Please make plans to attend and be a part of the festivities at your next Cluster Steward Council meeting, which will be held at Hillwood High School on February 12 at 3:00 pm. Please come to the Davidson Road entrance. Previously, meetings were held at our Union Hall, but your leaders decided to make it easier for you to attend a meeting in different areas of town. We look forward to seeing you at the next Union Meeting!
