The 99% Win Big On Election Day

Pro-worker candidates & issues win in TN and nationwide

The results are in—and working people won big on Election Day. The 99 percent, including working families in Maine, Ohio, Mississippi, Arizona, and Tennessee asserted themselves and proudly proclaimed that they want a country where people come before profits, every American has a good job that can support a family, people who have worked hard can retire with dignity and where the next generation can have a better life.
 
This Election Day, SEIU members joined with other Americans to:

• Reject Ohio Governor Kasich's anti-worker SB5 
• Make history in Knoxville by electing the city’s first woman mayor, Madeline Rogero, a staunch supporter of workers’ rights and former organizer. Rogero was endorsed by SEIU Local 205.
• Add a pro-worker seat in the New Jersey state assembly 
• Reject Mississippi’s extreme "personhood" proposal
• Fire Arizona State Senate President Russell Pearce, the author of SB1070, and Michigan’s anti-public education ideologue Republican Representative Paul Scott
• Hold on to a pro-worker majority in the state senate in Iowa
• Reject the Tea Party-GOP's attempt to remove same-day voter registration in Maine
• Approve an SEIU-supported initiative mandating more training for long-term care workers in Washington State

 
And there were countless other wins across the country.
 
“For every candidate who thinks the people who tend to the sick, protect our communities, teach our children, and run into burning buildings will be easy targets; think again,” SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry said in a statement. “In the streets of Ohio and states across the country, people are standing together to say: No More.”
 
In Ohio, SEIU District 1199 President Becky Williams said, “This is a victory not just for Ohio but for the nation. From this moment, let there be no doubt that the citizens of our state have spoken and they stand in solidarity with our everyday heroes like nurses, parole officers and other public employees.”
