SEIU Members Say Thank You to Jim Cooper for Healthcare Reform

At the monthly meeting of the SEIU Retiree Chapter, special guest Don Majors gave an excellent presentation on what healthcare reform means for retirees and seniors.  Majors is a former Metro Councilman and now works for Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Nashville) as the congressman's point man on healthcare in the district.  SEIU members also used the occasion to present a letter of thanks to Rep. Cooper on behalf of the thousands of SEIU members who live and work in TN-05.

Mr. Majors explained that the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962) will be a major help to Tennesseans who work, who are retired, and who own their own small businesses.  Speaking to a group of retirees, Majors focused most on how the legislation will impact seniors and Medicare.  The main things he focused on is how the Medicare "donut hole" will be filled, and how new reforms in the Medicare Advantage program will make sure that more money is spent on actual delivery of care instead of lining the pockets of insurance companies.  Majors also emphasized that the legislation reduces the deficit within 10 years, that people with pre-existing conditions can no longer be turned down for coverage, and how the newly-created Healthcare Exchange will allow companies to compete for some 31 million new health insurance customers.  You can take a look at the information Mr. Majors brought with him by clicking here.

Retiree chapter activist Gloria Jones presented a letter of thanks to Majors and Rep. Cooper on behalf of SEIU members and their families across the 5th District who will benefit under the legislation.

The next meeting of the Retiree Chapter will be on Tuesday, April 27.  Details to come soon.
