Politicians Are Trying to Silence Your Voice @ Work!

TN House Bills 159 & 160 Restrict Freedom of Speech for Employees

With the economy still struggling, thousands of Tennesseans are unemployed or underemployed. They are struggling to put food on the table, get affordable health insurance, and keeping a roof over their head. It would be the perfect time for our state legislators to demonstrate that they are looking out for working Tennesseans in tough times. But what have they done instead? Launched a full-scale attack against working people.

Case in point are two bills (H.B. 159 and H.B. 160) which, among other things, seek to take away your voice in government. Even though corporations and wealthy individuals are allowed to have unlimited access to politicians, they want to take away your right to that same access. Glen Casada (R-Franklin) and Bill Ketron (R-Murfreesboro) have introduced these bills to make sure that workers don’t get to have a say in their own pay, benefits, workplace safety, and conditions of employment.

Why are these politicians pushing for this legislation? Because right now, the only voice speaking out in defense of workers and calling businesses to task for how they have wrecked the economy is organized labor. Whether they work in the public sector or the private sector, workers participating in unions really have helped influence politicians and the decisions they make. They know that labor has been effective and that threatens their twisted worldview and their profit margins. They want to stamp out working families’ voice in politics, in the media, and in the halls of our government. Keeping you from having a voice is the only purpose of this legislation.

Help us put a stop to this latest attack on working people by politicians with a radical agenda.

What Can You Do?

  1. Call Your State Legislator:  1-800-449-8366
  2. E-Mail Your State Legislator:  http://www.capitol.tn.gov/legislators/

And tell the politicians...

  • "Where are your priorities? Why are you spending time attacking public employees when you should be focused on creating good jobs in Tennessee?"
  • "Attacking public servants does nothing to create jobs or improve the economy."
  • "Don’t interfere with our First Amendment rights to free speech and to petition the government. It is unpatriotic to try and silence the voices of hard-working Americans who pay taxes and serve the public."
