City Employees Stand Together In Chattanooga

Chattanooga, quality public services

Phil Grubb (IBPO), Steve West (SEIU), and Jonathan Lehman (IAFF) speak out for Chattanooga's public employees.

In a strong display of solidarity, over 150 public employees from SEIU Local 205, the IBPO (police union) and IAFF (firefighters union) filled the Chattanooga city council building to voice their concerns to council members.

    There was a lot to celebrate for the 30th anniversary of the Riverbend festival in Chattanooga.  This year, Riverbend attendees coming from all over the U.S. were greeted by Chattanooga's working families- including members of SEIU Local 205 -  who came together to commemorate the spirit of solidarity that has made the Scenic City's working people strong.

    Local 205 members will join in solidarity with a dozen other unions in Chattanooga at the Riverbend Festival by distributing paddle fans to attendees and talking to them about how to rebuild the middle class.

  • Local Unions Endorse Russell Gilbert’s Re-Election to Chattanooga City Council
    Five of the most influential labor unions in Chattanooga announced their unanimous support for Russell Gilbert in his re-election bid for the District 5 city council election.  The Service Employees International Union (SEIU Local 205), International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 820 and the Chattanooga Building and Construction Trades union all have members who work as city employees and have endorsed Gilbert.  Also supporting Mr. Gilbert are the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW Local 175), and the Chattanooga Area Labor Council.

    Andy Berke, the candidate that SEIU supported, won election to the state Senate in a landslide victory!

    Thanks to the hard work of Chattanooga union activists who went door-to-door and to hundreds of members in the district who cast their votes, Berke was elected with over 63% of the vote against the well-connected son of a former U.S. Senator.

    Dozens of SEIU members turned out to talk to Chattanooga city council members at the March membership meeting.  This being budget season, employees had tough questions for the elected officials that the Union helped elect less than a year ago.
  • SEIU Brings Change to Chattanooga!
    SEIU's slate of pro-worker candidates won big in Tuesday's city council elections, in no small part thanks to a major coordinated union campaign to change Chattanooga.  Of the five candidates that Local 205 endorsed, four of them won their races and one is headed to a runoff election.
