Vote to Ratify the New Metro MOU on Aug. 7!

All SEIU members who work for Metro Government are invited to come vote to ratify the new M.O.U. (Memorandum of Understanding) between SEIU and Metro Government.  Voting will be on Thursday, Aug. 7 from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm at the Union Hall, which is located at 521 Gallatin Road in East Nashville.

SEIU Announces Metro School Board Endorsements

SEIU Local 205 announced a list of candidates endorsed in this year’s Metro school board elections in Nashville on August 7.  SEIU endorses William Mason Jr. in District 1, Tim Coleman in District 3, and Lee Limbird in District 9.

Dozens of SEIU members take action at Metro Council

SEIU members taking action was the key to victory in stopping privatization at Metro Social Services when the department’s Board of Commissioners voted against the outsourcing of its homemaker and nutrition services programs.  As a result, between 40 and 50 jobs that would have been eliminated next year were saved.

Local 205’s president, Doug Collier, was elected to the Board of Auditors, a corps of officers that serve as a watchdog group for the International Union’s accounting practices.

"Rule of 75" Bill Passes Metro Council!

A bill supported by SEIU which would provide additional retirement benefits to certain employees in the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office passed on final reading at Metro Council on June 17. The ordinance, BL2008-206 (also known as the “Rule of 75 bill”), makes sure that employees who perform public safety duties receive the same benefits as their counterparts in the Metro Police and Fire Departments.

Union Member Re-Elected to Metro Benefit Board!

Edna J. Jones, a member of SEIU and employee of Metro Public Works, was handily re-elected to the Benefit Board.  Thanks to the efforts of SEIU members across the city, Edna received 59% of the vote in a four-person race, leading to a resounding victory for workers.

Union Action Protects Retiree Benefits!

An SEIU-backed bill passed the Metro Council on its third and final reading thanks to the hard work of union activists and retired Metro employees.

EFCA Resolution Passes Metro Council!

SEIU took on one of its last political initiatives of the year by urging the Metro Council to pass a resolution in support of the Employee Free Trade Act, also known as “EFCA”. The council resolution, 2007-76, is intended to send a signal to Davidson County’s state and federal lawmakers that workers have the right to organize and to be free from employer intimidation.
